Whether this school actually develops future-critical science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics — and what a year of it costs.

How safe is the school, really?

Campus Safety

Based on the school’s safety pages and news reports, Deerfield describes a staffed safety operation today and has a documented history involving former teachers. It lists a 24/7 help line, security officers on duty around the clock, an independently staffed whistleblower hotline open 24 hours and a policy that all employees are mandated reporters; a report the school released in 2013 found that two former teachers engaged in sexual conduct with students, and the Greenfield Recorder reported in June 2025 that it had reached a further settlement with a person who alleged abuse by a former teacher, and had settled other claims in 2023, one involving a member of its athletics staff who was fired after an investigation by the academy.

American School & UniversityThe school’s report found that a mathematics teacher who taught from 1956 to 2000 “engaged in sexual conduct with at least one student” and an English teacher who taught until 1990 “engaged in sexual conduct with two students”; prosecutors planned to investigateApr. 1, 2013
Greenfield RecorderA “low six-figure settlement” with another person who alleged abuse by a former teacher; the paper also reports earlier settlements, including a 2023 claim involving a member of the athletics department who worked at the school for more than 40 years and was fired after an investigation by the academy; the school’s director of communications confirmed the settlement and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to protecting studentsJune 3, 2025

We found no incident counts, discipline data or published annual safety report, so safety cannot be set against other schools on figures. The 2013 report concerns teachers whose service, as reported, ended in 2000 and 1990; the 2025 article reports settlements as recent as 2023 and 2025, one of them involving a staff member who was fired after an investigation, so the reported history does not end with the earlier decades. A family should ask how a student reports a worry today, who is told, and how the school’s safeguards are overseen.

What's the true total cost, including fees — and how has it moved over the last few years?

Cost & Value

Deerfield lists 2026–27 charges of $79,940 for boarding students and $57,850 for day students, and says laptop, textbooks and health center services are included in tuition. The Greenfield Recorder reported $74,440 and $53,860 for 2024–25, which puts the two-year rise at $5,500, or about 7.4%, for boarding and $3,990, or about 7.4%, for day students by our sums.

School yearBoardingDay
2024–25, Greenfield Recorder$74,440$53,860

2026–27, school financial-aid page$79,940$57,850

The school’s page lists these as the “Boarding” and “Day” charges for 2026–27 and gives an application fee of $60 ($125 for international applicants) and a $65 financial aid application fee through Clarity. Its FAQ says tuition includes room and board, textbooks, use of a MacBook Air and use of the health center. We found no itemised list of other costs such as travel, trips or personal spending. The Recorder reported in July 2026 that Deerfield is no longer admitting day students and will be a full boarding school for students joining in fall 2027 and later, so a day charge will apply only to students already enrolled as day students. A family should ask the Admission Office for what is not included and for the planned 2027–28 charge.

How qualified and stable are the teachers?

Teachers

Based on the school’s About page, 70% of Deerfield faculty members hold advanced degrees and have expertise in more than one discipline, and 91% of the faculty live on campus; the school’s profile gives an average class size of 12. Stability is not measured: we found no turnover or tenure figure.

The 70% figure covers the whole faculty and does not say how many hold a doctorate or teach science or computer science. The 4:1 ratio is an outside figure that we could not match to a school statement. A family should ask for average tenure, the number of teachers who left last year and the qualifications of the computer science and science teachers.

Are scholarships or financial aid available, and what share of students receive them?

Financial Aid

Yes. Deerfield says 38% of all current families receive financial aid, the average boarding grant is $68,235, and 35% of its financial aid recipients pay nothing. Under its Financial Aid Initiative, domestic families making up to $150,000 pay $0.

Greenfield Recorder, Sept. 17, 2024$15.9 millionFiscal year 2026 financial aid budget, a 6% increase

The two school pages count different things, 38% of families and 40% of students, and neither says which year the 40% describes. The aid page gives no average grant for day students and no total aid figure; the $15.9 million is the Recorder’s report of the budget. The Recorder also reported that families above $150,000 pay no more than 10% of verified income. For new applicants the page lists January 15, 2027 for all applications, March 10, 2027 for decisions and April 10, 2027 for accepting a grant. An individual family’s award depends on its own finances, so a family should ask the Admission Office for an estimate.

How strong is this school in AI, data science and computer science compared with other schools?

AI, Data & Computer Science

Based on our review, Deerfield grades 4.0/5 in computer science and 2.0/5 in AI & data science. It teaches five computer science courses, from Intro to Computer Science to Data Structures & Algorithms and Digital Logic & Computer Architecture, with a Data Science Sr. Capstone and AP Statistics in mathematics; we found no AI or machine-learning course.

AI useThe student handbook, as the Scroll quoted it in October 2024, says “Students are prohibited from using AI-generative tools for student work (including AI editing services)” unless a teacher directs their useThe Deerfield Scroll

The course list gives a description for one course only, so the content of the computer science courses is read from their titles. We found no computer science competition result, industry credential or AP computer science course (the Computer Science Club names ACSL and USACO competition preparation); the school’s profile says it offers official AP courses only in math and the arts, along with an AP Seminar. A comparison with other schools needs a figure the school does not publish, so this answer is a grade and not a ranking. A family should ask for the computer science course descriptions, enrolment and which teachers lead them.

How strong is it in robotics, engineering and hands-on problem solving?

Robotics & Engineering

Based on our review, Deerfield grades 2.0/5 in robotics and 2.0/5 in advanced manufacturing. Robotics is a club with a team of eight students that placed first out of 27 competitors at the Battle of Lexington in February 2025 and was the first from Deerfield to qualify for the FIRST Tech Challenge New England Premier Event, and the science course list includes Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Electric Vehicle Engineering electives.

The course list gives a description for the Electric Vehicle course only, and lists no robotics course. We found no robotics result after May 2025. The grade stays at 2.0 because the robotics provision is a club and the engineering courses are single electives. A family should ask who coaches the team, how many students take part and how many take each engineering elective.

Do students get access to advanced coursework, specialist electives and serious competitions?

Advanced Courses & Competitions

Based on the school’s course lists, yes for coursework and electives, less so for competitions. Deerfield lists AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, Honors Physics 2 (calculus-based), Quantum Physics, and Honors Biology 2, Honors Chemistry 2 and Honors Environmental Science 2, each a research course; its robotics team qualified for the state championship in 2025.

CompetitionsA student op-ed says the Science Department “has stopped sponsoring olympiad science”, with the exception of the American Mathematics Competition and the Physics Olympiad (F=MA)The Deerfield Scroll, May 2026

We found no AP results by subject, and the profile counts the whole school; the school offers official AP courses only in math and the arts and an AP Seminar, so the totals do not show science or computer science results. The op-ed is a student’s opinion; it also says that, to the writer’s knowledge, four students in total have qualified over the past five years for the USA Math Olympiad or the semifinal rounds of the USA Chemistry or Biology Olympiads. The robotics team’s 2025 results are the one serious competition record found. A family should ask which competitions the school sponsors this year and how many students take the research courses.

52/100 — Developing overall. Deerfield’s computer science is its furthest developed field: students move from Intro to Computer Science and Game Design and Programming through Honors Computer Science to Data Structures & Algorithms and Digital Logic & Computer Architecture, led by a Director of ITS and the Computer Science Program, beside a mathematics sequence that runs through AP Calculus BC, Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations with a Data Science Senior Capstone, honors research courses in biology and chemistry, and a robotics team that placed first at the Battle of Lexington in February 2025 and was the first from Deerfield to qualify for the FIRST Tech Challenge New England Premier Event.

But: cybersecurity is absent, aerospace is lacking, and AI is thin.

NarrativeWhere the marketing exceeds the evidence — and where it doesn't

Where the marketing exceeds the evidence

School says“Our themes span from Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analysis, Data Structures and Algorithms, and much more.”, the Computer Science Club on the school’s clubs page.
Evidence showsThe club is the only AI provision found. The school’s science and computer science list has 27 courses, five of them in computer science, and none on artificial intelligence or machine learning; the mathematics list adds AP Statistics and a Data Science Sr. Capstone. The student handbook policy the Scroll quoted in October 2024 reads “Students are prohibited from using AI-generative tools for student work (including AI editing services)” “unless under direct instruction from faculty to do so.”
No AI or machine-learning course identified.
Programme maturity: 2.0/5 — Activity, a club and data-oriented mathematics (AI & Data)

Where the school is stronger than its marketing suggests

School says“We provide an opportunity for students to learn coding, engineering, and how to build robots.”, the Robotics Club on the school’s clubs page.
Evidence showsThe description names no results. The student newspaper reports that the team of eight students placed first out of 27 competitors at the Battle of Lexington on February 15, 2025, earned the highest score in that competition’s history and qualified for the state championship, and that it was the first in Deerfield history to qualify for the FIRST Tech Challenge New England Premier Event.

What a family should ask about directly

  • Cybersecurity is absent, aerospace is lacking and AI is thin: ask what a student can study or build in each. A Scroll feature headed “Beyond the Syllabus: AI-integrated courses and their goals” points to courses that use AI, so ask which run now and under what rules, given the handbook policy the Scroll quoted in October 2024.
  • Robotics is a club, and the team results we found come from two events in 2025. Ask who coaches it, how students join, how many take part and whether a robotics course is planned.
  • The school offers official AP courses only in math and the arts, along with an AP Seminar, and says students may sit an AP exam without the course (school profile). Ask how a student who wants a science or computer science AP exam prepares for it.
  • A May 2026 student op-ed in the Scroll reports that 28 terms of humanities classes are required to graduate and 15 terms of math and science, and that the Science Department has stopped sponsoring olympiad science (The Deerfield STEM Deficit). Ask which science competitions and research opportunities run this year.
  • The science and computer science course list gives titles, with a description for one course only. Ask for the current course catalog and which research, engineering and computer science courses run this year.
  • Safety history belongs in a family’s questions. The school published a report in 2013 on abuse of students by former faculty members, and further settlements, in 2023 and 2025, were reported in June 2025 (American School & University; Greenfield Recorder). Ask how reports are made and handled today and who a student can go to.

Our Story

Founded 1797, as our seal says.

We are an independent secondary school committed to high standards of scholarship, citizenship, and personal responsibility. Our core values tell who we are, and our history and tradition and archive timeline pages tell how we got here.

Citizenship

We live citizenship in a spirit of humility, empathy, and responsibility.

Interaction

Our face-to-face interactions are characterized by joy and generosity of spirit.

Mastery

We pursue mastery built on a foundation of breadth and versatility.

Experiences

We share experiences, large and small, as sources of relationships, identity, and community.

Milestones

1797

We are founded; our seal carries the words “Founded 1797.”

1902

Frank L. Boyden accepts an offer to be our principal, at an annual salary of $800, and stays for 66 years.

1916

John Williams House, the house that features our famous Door, is renovated into a dorm.

1918

Sunday Sings begin a long tradition of song at our Academy.

1922

The first Deerfield-Choate football game is played.

1930

Our school song, The Evensong, is written.

1968

Mr. Boyden retires.
