How safe is the school, really?
Based on the district’s safety pages, Metea Valley High School has a School Resource Officer assigned for 2025–26, visitor check-in through a Raptor system, cameras throughout the building and grounds, and drills for evacuation, severe weather, fire and active threats. Niche reports that 90% of the 100 students who answered its survey agree they feel safe at school. We found no incident-rate or discipline figures from recent years, and the one report of a threat we found, two written threats found in school bathrooms, dates from December 2019.
| Date | What was reported | As reported |
|---|---|---|
| Dec 2019 | Two written threats found in school bathrooms, on a Monday and a Wednesday | Aurora Police judged the threats “not credible”; a student was charged with disorderly conduct over the Monday incident; many parents kept children home |
The district’s pages list measures, and the survey is 100 students’ opinions: neither is an outcome. We found no recent suspension figures, no school-climate survey and no later report of a threat, so we cannot say how the school compares with others.
How do students perform on state assessments in reading and math?
Based on third-party copies of state data, Niche reports 70% of Metea Valley students proficient in reading and 63% in math in 2024–25 state testing, and Naperville.com reports that the state’s 2024–25 designation for the school was Commendable. Older figures on Public School Review are lower, at 45% in math in 2023 and 51% in reading in 2022, though still well above the Illinois averages it gives for those years.
| Source | Figure | Year and comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Niche | 70% proficient in reading; 63% in math | 2024–25 state testing; no comparison given |
| Public School Review | 45% proficient in math | 2023; Illinois 27% |
| Public School Review | 51% proficient in reading | 2022; Illinois 30% |
| Naperville.com, from the state report card | Commendable School | 2024–25; the page describes it as no underperforming student groups and a graduation rate above the state threshold |
The sources name no tests, so the Niche and Public School Review figures cannot be set side by side or read as a trend. We could not open the state’s own report card, so these are the state’s figures as other sites report them.
What's the graduation rate, and how college-ready are graduates?
Based on third-party copies of state data, about 94% of Metea Valley students graduate: 94.9% in the state report card’s 2024–25 data as Naperville.com reports it, 94% on Niche, and 94% for 2023 on Public School Review against 87% for Illinois. Niche reports that 51% of students take at least one AP course, with an average SAT of 1310 and ACT of 29 drawn from user reports rather than school data.
| Source | Figure | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Naperville.com, from the state report card | 94.9% graduation rate | 2024–25; no comparison given |
| Niche | 94% graduation rate; 51% take an AP course | SAT 1310 (1,213 user reports); ACT 29 (426 user reports) |
| Public School Review | 94% graduation rate, 2023 | Illinois 87% |
The school’s Top Scholars page lists, for each class from 2020 to 2027, recognitions such as National Merit Commended Students, Semifinalists and Finalists and Illinois State Scholars, with a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Class of 2024; it gives no counts. We found no college-enrollment or AP pass-rate figure, so how graduates fare after school is not shown here.
What's the real class size and student-teacher ratio?
Based on third-party pages, Metea Valley has about 14 students for each teacher: 14:1 on Niche, 14:1 on Public School Review for each year from 2023 to 2025 (Illinois 13:1), and 14.42 in the 2023–24 data Wikipedia cites. The school publishes no class-size figure of its own, so we cannot say how large an average class is.
| Source | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Niche | 14:1 | 2,766 students; national figure 16:1 |
| Public School Review | 14:1 in 2023, 2024 and 2025 | Illinois 13:1; 2,766 students in 2025 |
| Wikipedia | 14.42 | 2,807 students in 2023–24 |
| School website | About 2,700 students | Enrollment only; no teacher count |
Enrollment differs by source, and Public School Review shows it falling from 3,018 in 2021 to 2,766 in 2025. A ratio divides all students by all teachers, including any who do not teach a class, so it says less than the size of a class does.
How strong is this school in AI, data science and computer science compared with other schools?
Based on our review, on the scale we use for every school, computer science grades at Level 4 of 5 (4.0/5, Excellent) and AI & data science at Level 2 (2.0/5, Weak). We have no ranking against other schools; the grades rest on AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A, semester courses in Coding (JavaScript), Web Design, Emerging Technologies (Unity and C#) and Video Game Design, and AP Statistics.
Two limits hold the grades where they are. Computer science stops short of Level 5 because we found no computing competition, no independent record of the courses and no AP score data, and the mathematics document gives AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A the same eligibility line. AI & data science sits at Level 2 because we found no AI or machine-learning course and no data-science club, only AP Statistics and data-analysis topics inside other courses.
How strong is it in robotics, engineering and hands-on problem solving?
Based on the school’s course documents, engineering is its deepest hands-on provision: two Engineering Technology courses, then Project Lead The Way courses from Introduction to Engineering Design through Digital Electronics, Civil Engineering and Architecture and Aerospace Engineering to a senior capstone. Robotics grades at Developing (3.0/5) in our review because a robotics club and course units sit beside that sequence, but we found no robotics team result from the last three years.
| Course | What it covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering Technology 1 | Engineering design process, product design, architecture, manufacturing | Semester; no prerequisite |
| Engineering Technology 2 | Arduino microcontroller, glider, 3D printing, VEX Robotics | Semester |
| PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design / Principles of Engineering | Design process, data analysis, product life cycle / robotics, structures, mechanisms, electronics | Full year, weighted; students begin with one of the two |
| PLTW Digital Electronics | Circuit design, programmable logic controllers | Full year, weighted; College of DuPage dual credit |
| PLTW Civil Engineering and Architecture; Aerospace Engineering | Sustainable and residential design / flight, aircraft and rocket design, space exploration | Full year, weighted |
| PLTW Engineering Design and Development | A senior capstone design project chosen by students; engineering ethics | Full year, weighted; needs any two PLTW courses |
| Architectural Drafting; CAD | Revit and AutoCAD; Fusion 360 with CAM and 3D printing | Full year; College of DuPage dual credit |
Competition results point the same way for building and a little less for robotics. At the Science Olympiad regional in 2024 the team’s Tower, Scrambler and Wind Power entries each placed first, and in 2026 its Helicopter placed first; the robotics club’s own page describes competitions but reports no results, and the district’s VEX league pages list no teams or results.
Do students get access to advanced coursework, specialist electives and serious competitions?
Based on the school’s course documents and public competition records, advanced coursework looks to be there: AP Computer Science Principles and A, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, weighted Project Lead The Way courses, and College of DuPage dual credit in Digital Electronics, drafting, CAD and Human Anatomy. Serious competition is clearest in Science Olympiad, where the team placed 7th of 53 at the 2025 Illinois state tournament; we found none in robotics or computing.
| Field | Advanced work found | Competition or research |
|---|---|---|
| Computer science & data | AP Computer Science Principles and A; AP Statistics; semester Cybersecurity, Coding, Web Design and Emerging Technologies | None found |
| Mathematics | AP Calculus AB and BC; honors Geometry, Algebra 2/Trig and Precalculus taken in sequence toward AP Calculus | None found |
| Science | AP Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science; Genetics; Human Anatomy with dual credit | Science Olympiad at the Illinois state tournament in 13 seasons since 2013, 7th of 53 in 2025 and 19th of 54 in 2026; Argonne National Laboratory research projects in 2022, 2023 and 2025 |
| Engineering & robotics | Project Lead The Way sequence to a senior capstone; Architectural Drafting and CAD with dual credit | No recent robotics team result found |
| Cybersecurity | A single semester course; no follow-on course found | None found |
Participation in the iSTEM research programme is by invitation only, with one team allowed per school under the laboratory’s programme, and no Metea project is listed for 2024. In 2025 eight students used an X-ray beamline at the Advanced Photon Source to study how a fungus affects herbs grown in copper-contaminated soil.
Which future-critical STEM fields is this school genuinely strong in—and which ones are major gaps?
Based on our review, computer science is the strongest field (4.0/5, Excellent), and robotics, biotechnology, aerospace and advanced manufacturing follow at Developing (3.0/5 each). AI & data science, cybersecurity, clean energy and Earth systems are thin at 2.0/5 each, and battery storage is the major gap, with nothing found (0.0/5).
| Field | Score | Standing |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Computational Thinking | 4.0/5 | Excellent |
| Robotics & Autonomous Systems | 3.0/5 | Developing |
| Biotechnology & Synthetic Biology | 3.0/5 | Developing |
| Aerospace & Space Technology | 3.0/5 | Developing |
| Advanced Manufacturing | 3.0/5 | Developing |
| AI & Data Science | 2.0/5 | Weak |
| Cybersecurity & Digital Safety | 2.0/5 | Weak |
| Clean Energy & Climate Technology | 2.0/5 | Weak |
| Earth Systems & Geospatial | 2.0/5 | Weak |
| Batteries & Energy Storage | 0.0/5 | Weak |
Will your child be ready for jobs that don’t exist yet?

Nothing found for
No student work was found evidencing these. For a school this well documented, an unrecorded programme is unlikely to be a large one.
What a family should ask about directly
- Battery storage is absent, and AI and cybersecurity rest on single electives or a club — ask whether a second cybersecurity course or any AI course is planned.
- Robotics is the field where the course list reads stronger than the competition record. We found no team result from the last three years; the district’s league pages list no teams. Ask which robotics teams the school fields this season and how they placed.
- The computing courses come from the school’s own course documents. The mathematics document gives AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A the same eligibility line; ask the counseling office which computing courses are running this year.
- The iSTEM research programme is by invitation only, and Argonne’s programme allows one team per school, so not every interested student will have a seat. No Metea project is listed for 2024.
- We could not read the district course catalog, the school profile, the full clubs list or the state report card, so graduation, test and discipline figures come from third-party pages and are dated in the Q&A. It is why confidence on several fields is not higher.
