Whether Shadow Creek actually develops future-critical science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics — and how enrollment works.

How safe is the school, really — beyond what the marketing says?

Campus Safety

Based on the district’s staff directory and news reports, Shadow Creek has a lead campus officer and a campus officer on staff, and two public incidents are on record: in September 2025 a student was arrested after a tip led police to a gun in a backpack, with no one hurt, and in April 2022 a teacher was arrested over an alleged improper relationship with a student and later indicted. On Niche, 79% of the 75 students who answered say they feel safe.

The district said the 2025 student would face “serious weapons charges” and did not name them. The 2022 indictment is a charge, not a finding, and we found no report of how the case ended.

The Texas Tribune’s page for the school has no discipline section, and we found no school-level suspension or expulsion figures. Niche reviewers mention occasional fights and mixed views of discipline. We found no school-climate survey result.

How do students perform on state assessments in reading and math?

State Assessments

Based on Texas Education Agency figures, 67.0% of Shadow Creek’s STAAR results were at grade level on the page that sets out the school’s 2024–25 state rating, and Niche reports 71% of students proficient in reading and 55% in math for 2024–25.

The state rates the school A overall, with A for Student Achievement, B for School Progress and A for Closing the Gaps; the district’s rating is B in each. The Tribune page gives no year for the 67.0% figure, and Niche describes its figures as drawn from the STAAR and end-of-course exams.

The gap between reading and math is the figure to ask about. We found no growth measure or score for the state science exam.

How qualified and stable are the teachers — credentials, average tenure, turnover?

Faculty

Based on Texas Education Agency staffing figures, Shadow Creek had 141.3 full-time-equivalent teachers in 2023–24, with an average of 9.7 years of experience against 10.4 in Alvin ISD and 11.1 across Texas, and 36.1% held a master’s or doctorate.

Students per teacher18.215.6 / 14.7
Average base salary$73,531$69,370 / $62,474

The school pays above the district and state averages and its teachers are slightly less experienced than both. Niche shows a ratio of 17 to 1 and 40.3% of teachers in their first or second year, with no date; the 40.3% sits oddly beside a 9.7-year average, and we could not reconcile the two, so we rely on the state’s average.

We found no turnover or tenure figure for the school. Niche reviewers describe caring teachers and also inconsistent teaching quality.

What’s the graduation rate, and how college-ready are graduates?

Outcomes

Based on Texas Education Agency figures, the Texas Tribune’s page for the school shows 99.5% of students graduating in four years and 87.0% college, career or military ready on its state-rating page, which gives no year for either, and a Class of 2023 four-year rate of 98.2%, against 97% for Alvin ISD and 90.3% for Texas. Of the 2022–23 graduates, 50.7% were college-ready in both reading and math.

The two readiness figures measure different things: the state’s college, career and military ready count credits several routes, while the college-ready figures count students ready in reading and math. The dropout rate for grades 9–12 was 0.3% in 2022–23.

In November 2023 the College Board placed the school on its AP School Honor Roll at the Bronze level, which requires at least 40% of graduates to have taken an AP exam and at least 25% to have scored 3 or higher. We found no list of the colleges graduates attend.

Which future-critical STEM fields is this school genuinely strong in—and which ones are major gaps?

STEM Strengths & Gaps

No field reaches the mid band at Shadow Creek. Robotics and computer science are the strongest, both Weak at Level 2 (thin); AI, cybersecurity, clean energy, biotechnology, Earth systems, aerospace and advanced manufacturing are Weak at Level 1 (lacking); and battery storage is Weak at Level 0 (absent). The review’s overall readiness figure is 32/100, which reads Weak.

Level 1 here means exposure only: for most of these fields the evidence is a course listed in the district’s course guide or a unit in a science course, not a course shown to run at Shadow Creek. The guide covers every Alvin ISD high school and does not say which campus teaches each course, so the review grades what the campus itself publishes.

The school’s state outcomes are strong, with an A rating, and that does not change these grades, which measure future-critical STEM provision only. Ask the counsellors which of the courses in the review ran on the campus last year.

How strong is it in robotics, engineering and hands-on problem solving?

Engineering & Robotics

Based on the school’s own pages, Shadow Creek’s hands-on engineering is two Project Lead The Way courses, Introduction to Engineering Design and Civil Engineering and Architecture, and an underwater-robot team, the Sushi Farmers, which the school reports placing 5th among 70 high-school teams at the 2025 International SeaPerch Challenge. RoboNation’s list of competing teams confirms the entry.

SeaPerch teams build and test a remotely operated underwater vehicle. The challenge was held on 31 May and 1 June 2025, and the standings sheets that would show the team’s class and score could not be read, so the placement rests on the school’s post alone.

The PLTW page lists the two courses and nothing more: no syllabus, project list or enrolment. The staff directory lists a PLTW teacher and an Introduction to Engineering teacher. We found no robotics course at the campus and no list of the school’s shop or laboratory equipment. Ask which courses run this year and how many students join the SeaPerch team.

Do students get access to advanced coursework, specialist electives and serious competitions?

Advanced Opportunities

Based on the district’s records, Shadow Creek earned the Bronze Distinction on the College Board’s 2023 AP School Honor Roll, which requires at least 40% of graduates to have taken an AP exam and at least 25% to have scored 3 or higher, and Niche puts AP enrollment at 33%. The district’s 2024–25 course guide lists AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Physics, but it does not say which campus offers each.

The district’s announcement says Alvin ISD offers 28 AP courses and that its students took 4,022 AP exams in the year it reports. We found no AP score results by course for Shadow Creek. College credit comes through dual credit with Alvin Community College, and the staff directory lists a Shadow Creek advisor for it.

The school’s UIL Academics page lists a Computer Science contest with no coach, and we found no Science Olympiad, FIRST or VEX team. The district course guide also lists PLTW Engineering Science, Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Design and Problem Solving; the PLTW page for Shadow Creek names only Introduction to Engineering Design and Civil Engineering and Architecture.

Does STEM translate into recognised qualifications, university preparation and credible next-step pathways?

College & Career Bridge

Based on district pages, Shadow Creek students can take dual-credit courses with Alvin Community College and, typically in junior and senior year, upper-level career courses at the JB Hensler College and Career Academy, with a daily bus from each high school; a 2022 district article names CompTIA Security+ and AWS welding among the certifications students there earned. We found no count of Shadow Creek students who earned any certification.

Alvin ISD says it offers more than 100 CTE courses in 30 programs of study across 14 career clusters, that more than 75% of its high-school students take at least one, and that courses are offered at each secondary school. The programs of study the district publishes include Cybersecurity, Programming and Software Development, Engineering, and Energy.

The campus’s own CTE page lists nine career clusters, including Information Technology, with no course detail we could read. The 2022 article reports certifications earned at the academy without naming any home campus. Ask the counsellors which pathways Shadow Creek students complete and how many earn a certification.

32/100 — Weak overall. Shadow Creek’s strongest ground is robotics and computer science: a Project Lead The Way engineering sequence of Introduction to Engineering Design and Civil Engineering and Architecture, a SeaPerch underwater-robot team the school reports placing 5th among 70 high-school teams at the 2025 International SeaPerch Challenge, and the AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A courses in the district course guide.

Evidence showsThe line is the first course in the cybersecurity programme of study in the district’s 2024–25 High School Course Guide, which does not say which campus teaches each course. Shadow Creek’s own pages name two engineering courses and nine career-cluster links, its staff directory lists no information-technology or computer-science teacher, and its UIL site shows the Computer Science contest with no current coach.

Where the school is stronger than its marketing suggests

School says“Alvin ISD is proud to announce that 11 outstanding students have been named National Merit Finalists”
Evidence showsThe post’s own list puts ten of the eleven at Shadow Creek, a fact its headline credits to the district. The school also holds the College Board’s Bronze Distinction on the 2023 AP School Honor Roll, and its state rating is A for 2024–25, with 87.0% of students rated college- or career-ready.

What a family should ask about directly

  • Battery storage is absent, and AI, cybersecurity, clean energy, biotechnology, Earth systems, aerospace and advanced manufacturing are lacking: for each, the evidence is a district-wide course list or a science unit, not a course shown to run at Shadow Creek. Ask the counsellors which of these courses ran on the campus last year, and how many students took each.
  • The district course guide does not say which campus teaches each course, and the one computing trace on the school’s own site is a UIL Computer Science contest with no current coach. Ask which AP Computer Science and cybersecurity sections run at Shadow Creek, and which courses are taken at JB Hensler instead.
  • Upper-level technical courses sit at JB Hensler College and Career Academy, 7380 Lewis Lane in Manvel, with daily bus transport from each high school: networking, welding and process technology among them. Ask how many Shadow Creek students enrol there and which credentials they earn.
  • The one robotics result, the 2025 SeaPerch placing, rests on the school’s own post; the organiser’s team list confirms the team, and the standings could not be opened. Ask whether the team competed in 2026 and who sponsors it.
  • The school’s HOSA, FFA, Academic Decathlon and Clubs pages returned no readable description, sponsor or result, so club activity could not be graded. Ask for the current club list with sponsors.
