How safe is the school, really — beyond what the marketing says?
Based on the school’s own pages, a student survey and news searches, we found no recent lockdown, threat or violence incident at St. Charles East, and no current discipline or climate-survey results, so we cannot say how safe students feel today. Niche reports that 85% of the 65 students it surveyed feel safe at school and 78% like it there. The school invites anonymous reports of bullying or a safety concern through an online form, and a Patch search found one older incident, a visitor stopped by staff in February 2020.
| Item | What we found | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Students who feel safe at school | 85% of 65 students surveyed | Niche |
| Students who like their school and feel happy there | 78% of 65 students surveyed | Niche |
| Reporting a concern | An anonymous online form for bullying and safety concerns; reports go to district and building administration | School news item, posted 19 August 2024 |
| Suspensions, 2015–16 | 51 students (2%) out of school and 88 (3%) in school; no expulsions | ProPublica, from federal Civil Rights Data Collection |
The school page states “District 303 prohibits any and all forms of bullying by students” and, for urgent cases, directs families to call 911. It also links a Virtual Calming Room and a student-supports form. Some Niche reviews ask for better mental-health resources and administrative responsiveness. We found no current suspension, chronic-absenteeism or climate-survey figures.
How do students perform on state assessments in reading and math?
Depending on the source and the year, between 44% and 71% of students meet Illinois’ standards in reading and math. Niche, using the 2024–25 tests, reports 71% proficient in reading and 59% in math. Public School Review, using older years, shows 44% in math (2023) and 51% in reading (2022) against 27% and 30% across Illinois, and 72% in science against 50%. Niche’s student-reported ACT average is 27 from 322 responses, and its SAT average is 1240 from 662.
| Measure | St. Charles East | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Reading proficiency | 71% | Niche, 2024–25 |
| Math proficiency | 59% | Niche, 2024–25 |
| Reading proficiency | 51% (Illinois 30%) | Public School Review, 2022 |
| Math proficiency | 44% (Illinois 27%) | Public School Review, 2023 |
| Science proficiency | 72% (Illinois 50%) | Public School Review |
The two sources do not agree on the year or the figure, so we show both. Neither carries a growth measure, and the Illinois Report Card, which publishes the state’s own figures, was not available to this review.
How qualified and stable are the teachers?
Based on review sites, we found no published figures for teacher credentials or turnover at St. Charles East. Niche and Public School Review both give 13 students for each teacher, and Niche reports that 5.3% of teachers are in their first or second year and that its average teacher salary is $67,226. In Niche’s poll, 83% of 87 students and parents agree teachers care about students, and 72% agree they give engaging lessons. The student newspaper’s March 2025 retirement profiles include a mathematics teacher with 35 years at East and a science teacher with 34 years, 26 of them at East.
| Measure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Students for each teacher | 13 to 1 | Niche; Public School Review, 2025 |
| Teachers in their first or second year | 5.3% | Niche |
| Agree teachers care about students | 83% of 87 responses | Niche |
| Agree teachers give engaging lessons | 72% of 87 responses | Niche |
| Agree teachers lead and control the classroom | 84% of 87 responses | Niche |
A ratio counts every teacher, so it is not the size of a class. The federal Civil Rights Data Collection for 2015–16, as ProPublica shows it, counted 168 teachers and 15.4 students for each teacher, and reported 19% of teachers chronically absent. Niche gives the school’s teachers an A.
What’s the graduation rate, and how college-ready are graduates?
Based on Niche and Public School Review, about 91% of students graduate, against 87% across Illinois, and Niche’s student-reported ACT average is 27. The school’s college-and-career page reports that 85.5% of the Class of 2026’s 487 graduates continued their education at 113 colleges and universities, 68.8% at four-year institutions and 16.7% at two-year institutions, with Elgin Community College, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Iowa State University as the top three destinations.
| Class of 2026 | Share of 487 graduates |
|---|---|
| Four-year colleges and universities | 68.8% |
| Two-year colleges | 16.7% |
| Trade and technical programmes | 5.8% |
| Gap year | 3.4% |
| Workforce, direct entry | 2.5% |
| Military | 2.3% |
The first two rows together account for the 85.5% continuing their education. Niche lists the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (401 students), the University of Iowa (319) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (233) as the colleges its students consider most. The graduation rate is for an earlier year than the Class of 2026, and we found no count of graduates who completed college-credit courses.
Which future-critical STEM fields is this school genuinely strong in—and which ones are major gaps?
Based on our review, no field reaches the strong band. Cybersecurity, robotics, computer science and advanced manufacturing are the strongest, at 3.0 out of 5, followed by AI and data and biotechnology at 2.0, Earth and geospatial and aerospace at 1.0, and clean energy and battery storage at 0.0.

| Aerospace | 1.0/5 | A bottle-rocket medal in 2013 only |
| Clean energy | 0.0/5 | Nothing found |
| Batteries | 0.0/5 | Nothing found |
How strong is it in robotics, engineering and hands-on problem solving?
Based on the school’s own pages, hands-on work is organised through clubs and the Fox Valley Career Center rather than named engineering courses. STCE Robotics began in 2023–24 with two VEX V5 teams and ran four in 2024–25; the team reports awards for three of them and a championship and a place at state for one, and the student newspaper confirmed in May 2026 that the team was recognised for reaching state. Engineering Club and Science Olympiad meet most Fridays under the same two advisors, and the Technology & Engineering page names Woods and Automotive workspaces. We found no engineering course title on any page that could be read.
| Area | What we found | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Robotics | Four VEX V5 teams (1413C, 1413D, 1413S, 1413E) in 2024–25 | Team’s own report; no independent record opened |
| On campus | Woods and Automotive workspaces; Auto, Engineering, Robotics and Woodworking clubs | No course titles on the department page |
| Off campus, Fox Valley Career Center | Welding I and II; Electrical Systems I and II; Automotive Technology I and II; Computer Technology | Grades 11–12 mostly; Maple Park |
| Science Olympiad | 10th of 47 teams at the 2013 state tournament; the founder says her team later won first place at state | Patch, 2013; student newspaper, March 2025, undated |
An Engineering Pathway sign-up dated August 2025 is linked from the school’s course-selection page, but the document could not be opened, so we do not describe what it leads to.
Do students get access to advanced coursework, specialist electives and serious competitions?
Based on Niche, St. Charles East offers 31 AP courses, with 29% of students taking at least one and a 58% pass rate, and its AP math and science enrolment are rated very high. The school’s own summer-work list names AP Calculus BC, AP PreCalculus, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Seminar and AP Research. Elgin Community College and the Fox Valley Career Center add dual credit and specialist electives. Competitions include a Math Team in three leagues, VEX robotics, Science Olympiad and Esports; we found no published results for the Math Team.
| Route | Examples | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced Placement | Calculus BC, PreCalculus, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, Seminar, Research | Niche counts 31 AP courses; the school’s list shows 14 with summer work |
| Dual credit | Elgin Community College; Waubonsee credit through the career center | Application and agreement forms; terms not readable |
| Specialist electives | Fox Valley Career Center: Security+, Networking+, game programming, welding, electrical, automotive, health | Off campus; grades 11–12 mostly |
| Competitions | Math Team (North Suburban Mathematics League, Dukane, ICTM State); VEX robotics; Science Olympiad; Esports | Math Team posts no results |
Niche rates AP enrolment in non-math, non-science subjects as very low. The AP list we could read covers courses with summer work only, so it is not the full set of 31.
Does STEM translate into recognised qualifications, university preparation and credible next-step pathways?
Based on the Fox Valley Career Center’s course pages, which East links, students can work towards CompTIA A+, Networking+ and Security+ in computer technology, OSHA 10 and EPA 608 in electrical, and the state nurse-aide exam in health occupations, with Waubonsee Community College credit. The center reports 174 certifications and 687 dual-credit hours in 2023–24 across all its districts. For East graduates, 85.5% of the Class of 2026 continued their education and 5.8% entered trade or technical programmes.
| Credential or route | Where it comes from | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| CompTIA A+, Networking+, Security+ | Computer Technology courses | Pass counts not published |
| OSHA 10; EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant | Electrical Systems I and II | Not published |
| Illinois nurse-aide exam; CPR | Basic Nurse Assistant Training | Center pays first state attempt |
| Waubonsee credit: NAS101 (6), HIT110 (3), CIS105 (1) | Health and Computer Technology | B or better in health courses |
The welding page names an S/P2 Auto Safety certification, not an AWS credential. None of the counts above is specific to East students, and the center serves seven districts.
Will your child be ready for jobs that don’t exist yet?
Here’s what the evidence actually shows for St. Charles East High School — not what the brochure claims.
40/100 — Weak overall. St. Charles East’s best-graded provision is structured: Fox Valley Career Center classes open to East students lead from networking to a CompTIA Security+ cybersecurity course with labs and National Cyber League competitions, four VEX V5 robotics teams have won awards since 2023–24 and one has reached state, and Niche counts 31 Advanced Placement courses alongside Elgin Community College dual credit.
But: clean energy and battery storage are absent, and Earth systems is lacking.

What a family should ask about directly
- The 2026–27 Academic Program Guide and the science department’s guide are PDFs this review could not open, so course titles beyond the department pages and the Advanced Placement summer-work list are unverified. Ask for the engineering, computer-science and environmental-science courses that run, and what the Engineering Pathway sign-up (August 2025) leads to.
- Cybersecurity, welding, electrical, automotive technology, game programming and the health classes are taught at the Fox Valley Career Center in Maple Park, inside Kaneland High School. Ask how many East students attend, how the center’s sessions (7:45 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.) fit East’s 12-period day and its bus, and how the credit counts towards graduation.
- Clean energy, battery storage, Earth systems and aerospace show no provision in the readable sources. A student set on any of them should ask what exists beyond the guide, including clubs.
- Published results differ: Niche shows 59% of students proficient in mathematics and 71% in reading for 2024–25, while Public School Review shows 44% and 51% from earlier years. The Illinois Report Card could not be opened. Ask the school for its report-card figures; Niche puts Advanced Placement participation at 29% of students and the pass rate at 58%.
