How safe is the school, really?
Based on Niche’s student poll, 91% of the 56 St. Charles North students who answered say they feel safe at school; the one incident report we found is from 2011, and the newest discipline figures we could read are federal counts for 2021–22, which is why this answer is Inferred.
| Signal | What is reported | Who reports it |
|---|---|---|
| Students who say they feel safe at school | 91% (56 responses; no year given) | Niche student poll |
| Out-of-school suspensions, 2021–22 | 48 | PlainSchools, from federal civil rights data |
| Discipline, 2015–16 | 53 students (3%) suspended out of school, 59 (3%) in school, 2 expelled, 4 referred to law enforcement, 0 arrests | ProPublica, from federal civil rights data |
| Chronic absenteeism, 2022–23 | 31.5% of students | PlainSchools |
| September 29, 2011 | The building was evacuated after a staff member found a single unspent bullet in a common area; police found no weapons and knew of no threat | Daily Herald |
| Incident figures, climate survey results and recent incident reports | None found; the Illinois Report Card could not be read | — |
A poll of 56 students among roughly 1,900 is a small sample, the 2015–16 counts are a decade old, and a single 2011 report is not a record, so none of this is a rate or a trend. We searched for more recent incidents and found none, which shows only that none reached the sources we could read. The main office, 331-228-4400, is the reliable check on this year’s record.
What's the true total cost, including fees — and how has it moved over the last few years?
Based on the school’s own pages, St. Charles North is a public school and none of the pages we read lists tuition; the amounts we found are a $60 yearbook for 2026–27 and a $15 Homecoming T-shirt, while registration, course, parking and athletic fees are charged but their amounts are not on the pages we could read, and no earlier year’s amounts were found, so how fees have moved is not shown.
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | None listed | Neither page lists a charge for attending |
| Registration fee | Amount not on the pages we read | Charged to the student’s PushCoin account on July 7, 2026; the district says it covers consumable classroom materials such as workbooks, art supplies, science lab materials and digital curriculum licenses |
| Course-specific fees | Amount not stated | Charged around Labor Day; the district lists specialized equipment fees separately |
| Junior and senior parking | Amount not stated | Applications were due May 27, 2026; the fee posts from July 1 to students assigned a tag |
| Athletic and sports fees | Amount not stated | Completed online through the athletics website |
| Yearbook, 2026–27 | $60 | Bought through the publisher’s website |
| Homecoming T-shirt, 2026–27 | $15 | Ordered through the PushCoin store |
| Fee waiver | Waives fees 100% | For families not directly certified, an application with documents must be on file before the last day of the first semester and be renewed each year; a family that has paid in full and qualifies after the second semester begins may ask for 50% back |
The district fee schedule for 2026–27 is a separate document that could not be opened, and we found no schedule for an earlier year, so a trend over the last few years cannot be shown. What a student pays depends on the courses, parking and sports chosen. The district business office, 331-228-4927, handles waivers, and the school office, 331-228-4400, is the reliable check on this year’s total.
How do students perform on state assessments in reading and math?
Based on Niche, 78% of St. Charles North students are proficient in reading and 74% in math on 2024–25 Illinois testing, while PlainSchools gives 49% in reading for 2021–22 and 51% in math for 2022–23; the two sets differ by about 25 points and we cannot say why, which is why this answer is Inferred.
| Measure | St. Charles North | Who reports it |
|---|---|---|
| Reading proficiency | 78% in 2024–25; 49% in 2021–22, against 29.9% for Illinois and 53% for the district | Niche; PlainSchools |
| Math proficiency | 74% in 2024–25; 51% in 2022–23, against 26.6% for Illinois | Niche; PlainSchools |
| Four-year graduation rate | 93% for the class of 2023, against 87.6% for Illinois and 92% for the district | PlainSchools; Niche gives 93% |
| SAT and ACT averages reported by users | SAT 1250 (696 responses) and ACT 28 (377 responses) | Niche users |
| Illinois Report Card | Not read | The school links to it; its pages could not be opened here |
Niche says its figures come from the state’s 2024–25 testing, which uses the ACT-based test in Grades 9–11; PlainSchools does not say how its older percentages are defined, and the years differ, so the gap may be a change over time, a difference in measure, or both. Either set is above the Illinois figure PlainSchools prints. The SAT and ACT averages come from students who chose to report a score, so they describe a self-selected group.
How qualified and stable are the teachers?
Based on Niche, 6.7% of St. Charles North’s teachers are in their first or second year and the student-teacher ratio is 15:1, while federal counts republished by PlainSchools show full-time-equivalent teachers falling from 136.9 in 2022–23 to 129.5 in 2024–25; no source we could read gives credentials or year-by-year turnover, so how qualified and stable the teachers are cannot be settled from public sources.
| Signal | What is reported | Who reports it |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time-equivalent teachers and students per teacher | 136.9 and 14.1 (2022–23); 130.9 and 14.5 (2023–24); 129.5 and 14.7 (2024–25), with 13.5 the Illinois high-school median | PlainSchools, from federal data |
| Student-teacher ratio | 15:1, no year given | Niche |
| Teachers in their first or second year | 6.7%, no year given | Niche |
| Student view of teachers (80 responses) | 73% say lessons are engaging, 80% say teachers care, 75% say they lead the classroom | Niche teacher poll |
| Teachers in 2015–16 | 137 teachers, 4% inexperienced, and 32% absent more than 10 days in the year | ProPublica, from federal civil rights data |
| Average teacher salary | $67,226, for the whole district | Niche |
| Credentials and year-by-year turnover | Not found | — |
The count of teachers has fallen by about seven in two years while enrolment held near 1,900, which is why the ratio has risen; the sources do not say whether that reflects retirements, restructuring or vacancies. The ratio counts every teacher against every student, so a lab or elective can be smaller, and we found no section sizes. The poll is a self-selected sample, and the salary is a district figure and not North’s. The main office, 331-228-4400, is the reliable check on who teaches the courses a student wants.
Which future-critical STEM fields is this school genuinely strong in—and which ones are major gaps?
Based on the school’s 2022 federal application and the student newspaper’s competition reports, St. Charles North is strong in none of the ten future-critical fields: AI and data, computer science, clean energy, Earth systems, aerospace, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology are thin, robotics is lacking, and cybersecurity and battery storage are absent. The overall score is 38/100, Weak.
| Field | Our grade | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| AI & Data | Weak · 2.0/5 | AP Statistics, Math 102 Statistics for dual credit, Calculus AB and BC with NetMath beyond it, and a second-place state finish for the math team in 2025; no AI or data-science course, club or competition |
| Computer Science | Weak · 2.0/5 | AP Computer Science named among the mathematics options in the 2022 application; no other computing course, club or competition |
| Clean Energy | Weak · 2.0/5 | Science Olympiad Electric Vehicle 7th at state in 2025 and a Wind Power qualifier in 2024; no energy course |
| Earth & Geospatial | Weak · 2.0/5 | Astronomy and Oceanography electives, and Science Olympiad Dynamic Planet 7th at state in 2025; no geospatial course |
| Aerospace | Weak · 2.0/5 | Project Synergy internships in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering, an Astronomy elective and Bottle Rocket 9th at state in 2025; no aerospace course |
| Advanced Manufacturing | Weak · 2.0/5 | Automotive and woodworking classes, an autos capstone and Project Lead the Way, with Auto, Electrical and Welding at the Fox Valley Career Center; no manufacturing competition |
| Biotechnology | Weak · 2.0/5 | Forensics, Anatomy and Physiology, sports medicine and health careers, a HOSA medical panel and Forensics 3rd at state in 2025; no biotechnology course |
| Robotics | Weak · 1.0/5 | Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket 9th at state in 2025; Project Lead the Way courses are not named; no robotics team or course |
| Cybersecurity | Weak · 0.0/5 | No course, club or competition found; the Fox Valley Career Center lists Computers without naming a cybersecurity course |
| Batteries & Energy Storage | Weak · 0.0/5 | No course, club or competition found |
No field reaches the Developing band, and none of the fifteen future-critical domains is covered at Level 3. The grades are deliberately cautious because the Academic Program Guide, the school’s own current course list, is hosted where it could not be read, so a course the school offers today may be missing here; evidence confidence is 30 for AI and data, computer science, Earth systems, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology, and 25 for the rest. The strongest real provision is in mathematics and in advanced coursework generally.
Do students get access to advanced coursework, specialist electives and serious competitions?
Based on the school’s 2022 federal application and Niche, St. Charles North offers Advanced Placement courses (31 by the school’s count in 2022, 23 by Niche’s), a Project Lead the Way sequence of seven courses, dual credit, and University of Illinois NetMath courses after AP Calculus BC; its math team and Science Olympiad team reached the 2025 Illinois state meets, and we found no robotics, cybersecurity or computing competition.
- Advanced Placement: the application says the school offers 31 AP courses and that more than 700 students took more than 1,200 exams; Niche lists 23 courses, puts 36% of students in at least one and says 74% of those students pass at least one exam. We could not read a current course list to settle the difference.
- Mathematics beyond AP: the application says students who finish AP Calculus BC early can continue through NetMath, the University of Illinois online courses, and names Math 102 Statistics for dual credit.
- Engineering: the application says Project Lead the Way, introduced about six years earlier with honors weight, offers seven courses including a capstone, and that Project Synergy engineering courses lead to a 150-hour internship; it does not name the courses.
- Dual credit: the application names Elgin Community College, Waubonsee Community College and College of DuPage as partners and lists five dual-credit courses taught on campus, among them Math 102 Statistics and English 101 and 102.
- Competitions: the math team’s freshman and sophomore team took second at the 2025 state meet, the best finish in North’s history, and the Science Olympiad team, in its first full-team year at state, placed 18th of 53. We found no robotics, cybersecurity, coding or engineering-design competition.
The coursework is documented by the school’s own four-year-old application and the competition results by the student newspaper; participation in each course and the courses now running are not, which is why this answer is Inferred and why the figures describe what is available and not what students have earned.
How strong is it in robotics, engineering and hands-on problem solving?
Based on the school’s 2022 federal application, St. Charles North runs a Project Lead the Way sequence of seven courses ending in a capstone and a Project Synergy route from engineering courses to a 150-hour internship, and its Science Olympiad team placed 7th in Electric Vehicle and 9th in Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket at the 2025 state tournament; we found no robotics team or course and no list of the engineering courses, and grade robotics lacking (1.0 out of 5) and advanced manufacturing thin (2.0).
| Course or group | What it is |
|---|---|
| Project Lead the Way | Introduced about six years before the 2022 application, with honors weight; seven courses including a capstone; the application names none of them |
| Project Synergy | Engineering courses that lead to a 150-hour internship, in fields the application gives as aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering |
| Automotive and woodworking | Sections the application says were added, with an automotive capstone |
| Science Olympiad build events | At the 2025 Illinois state tournament, 7th in Electric Vehicle and 9th in Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket, in a team result of 18th among 53 |
| Library remodel | The September 2025 report describes a Math Lab, a Testing Center and two small student labs; it describes no makerspace or fabrication lab |
| Clubs and teams | The school says it has more than 50 clubs, but its Activity Catalog could not be read, and we found no robotics, coding or engineering club elsewhere |
Hands-on engineering is documented in outline only: the school says a sequence exists and says what it leads to, but names no course, and no robotics team or result was found. That is why robotics is graded lacking and advanced manufacturing thin, and why the grade could rise if the current Academic Program Guide shows courses we could not see.
How well do the school's STEM students actually perform?
Based on the student newspaper, St. Charles North’s math team placed second at the 2025 Illinois state meet, the best finish in the school’s history, and its Science Olympiad team placed 18th of 53 at the 2025 state tournament, with third in Forensics and fourth in Material Science; we found no result from a national, robotics, cybersecurity or research competition.
| Team | Result | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Math team | The freshman and sophomore eight-person team placed 2nd at the state meet, the highest finish in North’s history | 2025 |
| Science Olympiad | First full team to reach state: 18th of 53; 3rd in Forensics, 4th in Material Science, 7th in Dynamic Planet and Electric Vehicle, 9th in Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket | 2025 |
| Math team | Won the regional meet, and the entire team qualified for state, where a junior placed 3rd in Algebra 2 | 2026 |
| Science Olympiad | Two juniors placed 5th in a chemistry lab event at state | 2026 |
| Robotics, cybersecurity, research and national competitions | None found | — |
These are results from two teams in the Illinois state field, reported by the school’s own student newspaper, and they show a programme that is improving from a recent start, since the Science Olympiad team reached state as a full team for the first time in 2025. They say nothing about how the typical STEM student performs; the school’s own results by subject are not published where we could read them.
Will your child be ready for jobs that don’t exist yet?
Here’s what the evidence actually shows for St. Charles North High School — not what the brochure claims.
38/100 — Weak overall. St. Charles North High School’s strongest provision is advanced coursework and a state-level record in two STEM teams: mathematics up to AP Calculus BC with University of Illinois NetMath online courses beyond it and dual-credit statistics, a Project Lead the Way sequence that the school’s federal application says runs to seven courses and a capstone, a Project Synergy route from engineering courses to a 150-hour internship, a math team that took second at the 2025 state meet, and a Science Olympiad team that has sent students to the state tournament in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
But: cybersecurity and battery storage are absent, robotics is lacking, and AI, clean energy and biotechnology are thin.

Where the marketing exceeds the evidence
No current AP course list could be read, so the figure of 31 is neither confirmed nor disproved.
Curriculum
- The 2022 application says students are encouraged to take “Math 102: Statistics” for dual credit or an AP Computer Science, Statistics, Calculus AB or BC course, and that students who finish AP Calculus BC early can continue through the University of Illinois NetMath online courses; a May 2026 student-newspaper profile lists Algebra 1, Calculus BC and Calculus 3 among the courses a retiring teacher taught
Evidence seen
- The math team’s freshman and sophomore eight-person team took second at the state meet on 26 April 2025, the highest team finish in North’s history, and in 2026 the whole team qualified for state and a junior placed third in Algebra 2 (Stargazer, 2 May 2025 and 24 April 2026)
- Niche rates AP mathematics enrolment “Very High” (third-party)
What's missing
- No artificial-intelligence, machine-learning or data-science course found
- No AI or data club, competition or project found
- The Academic Program Guide 2026–27 could not be read, so the current course list is known only from the 2022 application
Evidence seen
- The Fox Valley Career Center, which the school’s Academics menu links to, lists Auto, Computers, Cosmetology, Education, Electrical, EMT, Fire, Health, Law and Welding; its page names no cybersecurity course
What's missing
- No cybersecurity course, club, CyberPatriot team or capture-the-flag record found for North
- No networking or security course or certification found on campus
- The Academic Program Guide 2026–27 could not be read, so a course not named elsewhere would not have been seen
Evidence seen
- At the Illinois Science Olympiad state tournament on 12 April 2025 the team placed 9th in Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket (Stargazer, 18 April 2025)
- The 2022 application says Project Lead the Way was introduced about six years earlier, with honors weight, and now offers seven courses including a capstone; it does not name the courses
What's missing
- No robotics team, club or course found
- Whether any Project Lead the Way course covers robotics is not established
- The Academic Program Guide 2026–27 could not be read
Evidence seen
- Science Olympiad placed 7th in Electric Vehicle at the 2025 state tournament, and 2024 qualifiers entered Optics and Wind Power (Stargazer, 18 April 2025 and 12 April 2024)
What's missing
- No energy, climate-technology or environmental-science course found among the science electives the application names (Astronomy, Forensics, Oceanography, Anatomy and Physiology)
- No energy club, laboratory or project found
Curriculum
- The application says Biology is required and names Forensics and Anatomy and Physiology among the science electives, and says the wellness electives emphasize “sports medicine and health careers”, with students earning CPR and AED certifications
Evidence seen
- The HOSA chapter’s annual medical panel on 10 November 2025 drew 11 healthcare professionals and has been held nearly every year since 2014–15 (Stargazer, 14 November 2025)
- Science Olympiad placed 3rd in Forensics at the 2025 state tournament, and 2024 qualifiers entered Physiology and Disease
What's missing
- No biotechnology course found: biotechnology is not simply biology, so the biology and health provision is not graded as biotechnology
- No laboratory-technique record, research project or biotechnology competition result found

Students write, photograph and edit the school’s news site, which publishes new content every Friday under two faculty advisers. Its awards page lists recognition from the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association for its web and newspaper entries in every year from 2018 to 2026, Illinois Journalism Education Association All-State recognition in 2018, 2019 and each year from 2021 to 2026, and IHSA state qualification, with an 8th-place finish in 2024–25 and 9th in 2025–26.
Stargazer, Awards & Honors and About Us (scnstargazer.org), read 9 Oct 2026; the awards are those of NISPA, the IJEA and the IHSA
North’s first full Science Olympiad team to qualify for state placed 18th of 53 teams at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on 12 April 2025. In the build events students designed and built to the event rules, the pairs placed 7th in Electric Vehicle and 9th in Robot Tour and Bottle Rocket.

Nothing found for
No student work was found evidencing these. For a school this well documented, an unrecorded programme is unlikely to be a large one.
What a family should ask about directly
- The Academic Program Guide 2026–27, which replaced the Course Offering Book, is hosted as a file that could not be read, the district’s download address for it is closed to automated readers, and the department pages and the Activity Catalog return only their menus. Courses here are therefore known from the school’s 2022 National Blue Ribbon application, the student newspaper, Niche and federal records, and a course the school offers today may be missing from this review. Ask for the current guide, which computer science, engineering, science and technology courses run this year, and how many sections of each there are.
- The 2022 application says Project Lead the Way was introduced about six years earlier with honors weight and now offers seven courses, one of them the capstone, and that a Project Synergy cohort takes engineering courses that lead to a 150-hour internship. It names none of the courses, and it is four years old. Ask which Project Lead the Way courses run now, whether any covers robotics, aerospace or manufacturing, how many students take each, and what Project Synergy requires.
- The Fox Valley Career Center, in Maple Park, serves seven districts and lists Auto, Computers, Cosmetology, Education, Electrical, EMT, Fire, Health, Law and Welding; it reports 174 certifications and 687 dual-credit hours for 2023–24 across all its districts. Ask how many North students attend, in which grades and for how much of the day, how transport works, whether the Computers programme includes networking or cybersecurity, and whether a place is guaranteed.
- The documented STEM teams are the math team and Science Olympiad, which meets on Friday afternoons in room 135; no robotics, coding or cybersecurity club or team was found, and the Activity Catalog, which lists more than 50 clubs, could not be read. Ask which technology and engineering clubs and competition teams run this year, who coaches them, and how a student joins.
- Cybersecurity and battery storage are absent from everything that could be read, robotics is limited to one Science Olympiad event, and AI, clean energy and biotechnology rest on statistics, a competition event or two, and biology and health electives. Ask whether any course or club in these fields is planned, and what a student who wants them does in Grades 11 and 12.
- The Illinois Report Card, which the school links to, could not be read, so outcomes come from third parties: Niche lists a 93% graduation rate, AP enrolment of 36% and a 74% AP pass rate, and the 2022 application gave a 97% graduation rate for 2020–21. Enrolment is 1,903 in 2024–25 (Niche, NCES), against 1,972 and 1,943 in two places in the 2022 application. Ask for the school’s own results by subject and for STEM course enrolment.
- The District 303 referendum on the 3 November 2026 ballot would fund a $282.5 million bond for facility work that includes expanded Career and Technical Education space; North hosts an information night on 14 October. Ask what space and which programmes would be added, and when.
